Calvert County Collector's Grade Henry 'Big Boy' .44 mag.

Established in 1654, Calvert County was called Patuxent County until 1658. It took its current name from the family of the second Lord Baltimore, Cecilius (Cecil) Calvert, the proprietor of the Maryland colony. Its area originally encompassed present-day Charles and Prince George's counties as well as parts of Montgomery and Frederick counties. With the establishment of Prince George's County in 1695, Calvert County's boundaries became close to what they are today. Prince Frederick has served as the county seat for nearly 300 years. But it wasn't the original county seat, Calvert Town or what was sometimes called Battle Town served as the home of the county courthouse from the early 1600s. Battle Town was situated at the entrance to Battle Creek on the Patuxent River. But by the early 1700s the courthouse was in bad condition and the location proved inconvenient for the growing number of colonists settling toward the northern borders of Calvert County. A new location was sought that would be more centrally located. A tract was laid out at Williams Old Fields with the courthouse -which was not completed until 10 years later, at the town center. The county seat was named in honor of Prince Frederick, the eldest son of King George II, as the region was still firmly under British rule. The Maryland General Assembly approved the new town location and name in 1728 and Prince Frederick, Maryland was officially established.

While home to many notables, Calvert is also famous for being the location of one of the most famous naval battles in American history. The Battle of St. Leonard's Creek were a series of naval engagements between a small American naval force and a much larger British one. The American commander, Captain Joshua Barney used a flotilla of shallow-draft barges to attack and annoy invading British naval forces, then retreated to the safety of shoal waters abundant in the Chesapeake region. On June 1, 1814, Barney's flotilla encountered a force led by the H.M.S. Dragon near St. Jerome Creek near Cedar Point. The American force retreated into the Patuxent River where it was quickly blockaded. Barney's force was outnumbered 7:1, but after retreating into St. Leonard's Creek which was too shallow for the British warships to enter, Barney's troops were able to fend off the attack. The towns of Calverton, Huntingtown, Prince Frederick, Benedict, St. Leonard's and Lower Marlboro were plundered and burned during this time by the frustrated British.
