Hurlock Railroad Station. After the Delaware Railroad built a station in 1867, in what is now Hurlock, the town’s growth and importance began to flourish. But it was not until 1890, when the Baltimore, Chesapeake and Atlantic (BC&A) Railroad intersected the Delaware Railroad in Hurlock, that the town really started to grow. Because of its excellent railroad facilities that carried passengers and products to major destinations, Hurlock became the industrial and commercial hub of the northern part of Dorchester County. It still holds that distinction, which is reflected in the town's motto, "On track...since 1892.".
Hooper Island Lighthouse is one of only five lights constructed in the Bay during the 1900's. The Hooper Island Lighthouse is located in approximately 18' of water, approximately three miles west of Hooperville, Upper Hooper Island. It is a caisson style light, sunk 13.5 feet into the muddy bottom of the Bay. It was first lit in 1902.
Dorchester County Courthouse, The front section of the present Dorchester County Courthouse was constructed in 1854 in Italianate style by noted American architect Richard Upjohn. In the years leading up the Civil War, the courthouse was the site of slave auctions and the trials of alleged Underground Railroad conductors.
Confederate Blockade Runners. During the American Civil War Maryland was split in its sympathies. In desperate need for supplies, Blockade Runners from the south made their way up the Nanticoke River, where Confederate sympathizers from town outfitted them with vital food and supplies for the beleaguered rebels.
Spocott Windmill. Representative of the English Style post windmills common during Dorchester County’s early history, Spocott Windmill has been in operation since 1972. Expertly crafted by the late master shipbuilder, James B. Richardson, Spocott windmill is that latest in a series of windmills dating back to the late 1700’s to occupy this sop. Nearby on the grounds is a c. 1800 one and one-half story colonial tenant house.
