Cape Henlopen Lighthouse, Completed in 1767, the Cape Henlopen Lighthouse was built on the north side of the Great Dune to obtain additional height. In 1777, the lighthouse was almost completely burned down by the British. The wardens repaired the damage and relighted in 1784. By time was something the lighthouse could not beat. In 1897 the sand dune surrounding the lighthouse was reported to be blowing away at a rate of 3 to 5 feet a year. In 1905 several tons of brush were placed about the tower to prevent the foundations and brick walls from being undermined by the drifting away of the sand. All measures to protect the lighthouse failed, and in 1926 a storm undermined the tower and caused it to fall.

Mason-Dixon Line, 1767 The Mason-Dixon Line (or "Mason and Dixon's Line") was surveyed between 1763 and 1767 by Charles Mason and Jeremiah Dixon in the resolution of a border dispute between British colonies in Colonial America. It forms a demarcation line among four U.S. states, forming part of the borders of Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware, and West Virginia (then part of Virginia). The Mason-Dixon line also settled Sussex County's western and southern borders.Lewes, 1st City of the 1st State, 1631 Sussex County, was the site of the first European settlement in Delaware, a trading post named Zwaanendael at the present site of Lewes in June 3, 1631. Dutch captain David Pietersen de Vries landed along the shores of the Delaware to establish a whaling colony in the mid-Atlantic of the New World. The colony only lasted until 1632, when De Vries left. Upon returning to Zwaanendael that December, he found the Indian tribes had killed his men and burned the colony. The Dutch then set about settling the area once again. Because Lewes was the earliest town founded in the state, and because Delaware was the first state to ratify the Constitution, the town refers to itself as "The first town in the first state."

Governor Ross Mansion, built 1850. William Henry Harrison Ross (June 2, 1814 – June 30, 1887) was an American farmer and politician from Seaford, in Sussex County, Delaware. Ross became Governor of Delaware in 1850 and had extensive holdings north of Seaford. Ross was in politics throughout his adult life, holding office from January 1851 to January 1885. His principal place of residence was an Italian Renaissance style mansion (which still exists today) in present-day Seaford that he built in 1850. Only 20 acres (81,000 m2) of land remain from the plantations original size of 1,400 acres (5.7 km2). There are many notable buildings on this property, you can find a granary, stable, smokehouse, corn cribs, and Delaware's only documented surviving slave quarters. Historic Georgetown Train Station, circa 1912. According to records search; the building was built on or just prior to 1868 (when railroad service began in Georgetown) and at first was a single story building with a relatively steep pitch. The second story, with gables and dormers, appeared sometime around 1912, giving the upper part of the structure nearly the same space as the lower.

Ship Building in Sussex County, circa 1860. Wooden boat building in the Chesapeake region began thousands of years ago when Native Americans along the East coast began to fell and hollow the trunks of cypress, poplar, and pine. From 1730 to 1770 shipbuilding became significant in Sussex County, especially at Lewes, on the Broadkill, and along Indian River. By 1860 there were a total of six shipyards in the county. By 1880 shipbuilding in villages, like Milton, had reached its peak. By 1919, Bethel, which had been a popular ship-building port along Broad Creek, builds its last ship. Today, shipbuilding is still an active part of Chesapeake culture, maintained alive through different non-profit educational and historical programs.
