Alabama Celebrates 200 Years of Achievements
On December 14th, 1819, Alabama became the 22nd state to be admitted to the Union. This year will mark the state’s bicentennial. In those 200 years, the Heart of Dixie has become home to Southern Hospitality and a culture that can’t be found anywhere else. To celebrate this historic event, Wellington LTD is producing an heirloom quality firearm that captures the history and culture of this great state.
Alabama played a large role in the Civil War. In 1861, they seceded from the Union and established the Confederate government in Montgomery. It was there at the Capitol building, which is still standing to this day, that Jefferson Davis was inaugurated. He would become the 1st and only President of the Confederate States of America. The first White House of the confederacy was in Montgomery as well and is now on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places. Alabama’s involvement and location in the Civil War has earned itself the nickname of The Heart of Dixie.
The state’s name has been used to link items with success. The USS Alabama was the sixth U.S. Navy ship to be named after the state. It was a battleship that served its duty in WWII. The ship was decommissioned shortly after the war and now has its final home in Mobile. A memorial park has been made where the USS Alabama and other achievements of many Alabamians live on. The “Alabama Gang” is associated with the success of a group of NASCAR drivers. They operated out of Hueytown and included notable drivers such as Bobby and Donnie Allison. The group has left its mark on the town with the city seal including two checkered flags on it.
The state of Alabama has also been referred to as the Cotton State. Over the 200 years of existence, the state has always produced a cotton as a commodity. The iron and steel industry also thrived in Alabama after the Civil War. This was because of its ability to mine all three minerals; iron ore, coal, limestone and dolomite. The Vulcan statue stands in Birmingham to reflect that accomplishment. With the statue standing 56 feet tall, it is the world’s largest cast iron statue. The state capitol is located in Montgomery and is featured as the main medallion of the left side of the rifle.
